Polishing Pads — Foam, Microfiber & Wool for DA and Rotary Polishers
A polishing pad is half of the abrasive system. The other half is the liquid, and the finish you get is what those two produce together — the same compound will cut hard on a wool pad and finish down on soft foam. That is the single most useful thing to understand before you buy: you are not choosing a pad, you are choosing a pad-and-liquid pairing for a specific defect on a specific paint.

What a Polishing Pad Actually Does
The pad carries abrasive, holds it against the paint, and manages heat. Dense, stiff material transfers more of the machine's energy into the surface, so it cuts faster and runs hotter. Open, soft material absorbs energy, spreads pressure, and lets the abrasive break down further before it stops working — which is what produces gloss. Pad face design matters too: flat faces give even contact on panels, waffled or slotted faces run cooler and conform better on curves and bumpers. Cut is not a property of the compound alone, which is why the same bottle appears in a heavy-correction step and a finishing step in different guides.
Foam vs Microfiber vs Wool
- Foam is the default. It covers the whole range from heavy cut to jeweling depending on cell structure and density, finishes cleanly, and is the most forgiving for a beginner on a DA. It is also the slowest to remove serious defects. Browse Rupes foam pads, cutting pads and finishing pads.
- Microfiber cuts far above its aggressiveness rating because thousands of fiber tips do the abrading. It is the fastest way to get real correction out of a random-orbital machine, and it stays cooler than dense foam. - Wool is for heavy defect removal — sanding marks, deep oxidation, hard single-stage and truck-fleet work — usually on a rotary. It cuts fastest and runs coolest of the three, and it leaves the most obvious hologramming, so it is always a first step, never a last one.
- The practical rule: pick the least aggressive combination that removes the defect in a reasonable number of passes. Every micron of clear coat you take is gone for good, and thin factory clear does not give you many chances.
Cut Levels, Colour Codes and Why They Are Not Universal
Most manufacturers colour-code pads by aggressiveness, but the codes do not agree between brands — one company's yellow is heavy cut, another's is a polishing pad. Read the density and the stated purpose, not the colour. Within a single brand the system is reliable: Rupes and Koch-Chemie both publish a pad-and-liquid pairing for each step, which is the fastest way to get a predictable result. If you are mixing brands, treat the first panel as a test section and adjust before committing to the whole car.
Pad-to-Backing-Plate Sizing
- Leave an overhang. The pad should be about 15–20 mm larger in diameter than the backing plate — roughly a 5-inch pad on a 3.5–4 inch plate, a 6-inch pad on a 5-inch plate. That lip lets the pad flex over curves without the hard plate edge digging into paint.
- Too small a pad on too big a plate exposes the plate edge and will burn a line into a body line. Too big a pad on too small a plate flexes excessively, robs the machine of torque, and stalls a DA on anything but a flat panel.
- Match pad size to throw. Long-throw 15 mm and 21 mm machines want 5–6 inch pads; short-throw and forced-rotation machines are happier on 3–5 inch. - Keep small pads for small areas. 1–3 inch pads on a nano or mini polisher handle pillars, mirror caps, bumper corners and door handles — places a 6-inch pad simply cannot reach flat.

How to Match Pad, Compound and Machine
- Decontaminate before you polish. Bonded iron and tar tear pads apart and drag contamination through the finish. Wash, then use iron removers and clay — the full process is in paint decontamination.
- Do a test section. Pick a 2x2 foot area, start with the least aggressive pad-and-liquid pairing you own, and inspect under strong light. If it clears the defect, that pairing is your process for the whole car. If not, step up one level — pad first, liquid second.
- Prime the pad, then use less product. Spread three or four pea-sized drops at low speed, then work at speed. Too much liquid is the most common beginner error — it lubricates instead of abrading, and the pad clogs in minutes.
- Let the abrasive break down. Most modern compounds need four to six slow, overlapping passes to work through their cycle. Stopping early leaves haze; continuing past a dry pad just generates heat.
- DA or rotary? A random-orbital DA oscillates as it spins, so it dissipates heat and will not burn through an edge if you stall it — the right tool for almost everyone. A rotary spins on a fixed axis: much faster cut, much less margin, and it introduces holograms that need refining out.
- Wipe down and protect. Remove polishing oils with a panel prep before you judge your work, then apply wax or sealant or a ceramic coating the same day.
Cleaning Pads On the Fly (and Between Jobs)
A clogged pad stops cutting and starts hazing, so clean it every panel or two, not every car. On the fly: hold a microfiber towel against the spinning face for a few seconds, or use a pad brush and a burst of compressed air. Between jobs, soak in warm water with a dedicated pad cleaner or a mild APC, squeeze — never wring or twist, which tears foam from the backing — rinse, and air dry face-up. Never dry pads in a machine dryer. Rotate through several pads on a full correction rather than pushing one; a saturated pad is the reason most people think a compound "stopped working."

Foam or microfiber for a beginner?
Foam. It is more forgiving, finishes cleaner, and hides a slightly uneven technique. Microfiber cuts much harder for the same machine and pressure, which is great when you know what you are doing and unforgiving when you do not. What size pad should I buy?
5 or 6 inch for panels on a long-throw DA, 3 inch for tight areas with a matched plate, and 1–2 inch on a nano polisher for pillars and mirror caps. Keep the pad about 15–20 mm wider than the backing plate so the plate edge never contacts paint.
Do I need a different pad for every compound?
Not a different pad type, but a clean pad per step — and never mix a cutting liquid and a finishing liquid on the same pad. Residual heavy abrasive in a finishing pad will haze the paint you are trying to refine. Most brand systems, including Koch-Chemie and Rupes, publish a pad for each liquid.
How long does a polishing pad last?
A foam pad cleaned properly will handle a dozen or more cars; microfiber wears faster because the fibers mat down. Retire a pad when the face is glazed and slick, when foam separates from the hook-and-loop backing, or when the edges are torn. A worn pad does not just cut less — it cuts unevenly, which shows up as inconsistent gloss.
Can I polish a ceramic coating with these pads?

Why is my DA polisher stalling?
Usually too much pressure, a pad that is too large for the plate, or working on a curved surface where only part of the pad is in contact. Reduce pressure until the pad rotates freely, check that your rotation mark is still turning, and step down a pad size on complex panels.
