Ceramic Coating: The Complete Guide (Paint, Trim, Wheels, Glass and Matte)
Most ceramic coating questions come down to the same few. Can you put it on plastic trim? What about matte paint? Is a spray as good as a bottle coating? How long before you can wash it?
This guide answers all of them in one place, using what each coating's maker actually says. It covers what a coating is, which type fits your car, every surface you can and can't coat, how to apply one, and how to keep it working.
Quick Answer
A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a thin, hard, water-repelling layer on your car's surfaces. CarPro's CQuartz UK 3.0 goes on at 1–2 microns per coat and is rated 2 to 5 years. Most coatings are made for paint. Plastic trim, tires, glass, leather and fabric can each get their own formula, like CarPro DLUX for trim and wheels. Matte paint is the big exception: CarPro's US site advises against any semi-permanent coating on a finish you can't polish. For an easier start, a ceramic spray like Quan Armor goes on a clean, dry, cool car, out of direct sun, one 3x3 ft section at a time.

What Is a Ceramic Coating?
A ceramic coating is a liquid that cures into a hard, clear layer and bonds to the surface underneath. CarPro describes CQuartz UK 3.0 this way: once the liquid "meets the open air it cures and forms a ceramic quartz hard coating." That formula is 70% SiO₂ (silicon dioxide, the "quartz" in the name). Gyeon builds Q² Mohs EVO from modified polysilazanes, a different chemistry that cures to the same kind of slick, solid layer.
It's thin. CarPro lists UK 3.0 at 1–2 microns per coat, and about 10 ml covers a car per coat. That's why a coating adds gloss and slickness but doesn't hide deep scratches, and why CarPro wants paint polished to a high level before coating.
Here's how it differs from wax and sealant. A coating cures and bonds, so it's rated in years rather than weeks or months, and most coatings take polishing, not a cleaner, to remove once they cure. Our wax vs sealant guide covers the softer options.
Coating, Ceramic Spray or Topper? The Three Types
"Ceramic" on a label can mean three different things. Knowing which one you're holding saves a lot of disappointment.
| Type | What it is | Durability (maker) | Work involved |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bottle coating | A concentrated coating that cures hard. Usually goes on after polishing. | CQuartz UK 3.0: 2–5 years. Mohs EVO: up to 36 months on one layer. | A full prep day: wash, decon, polish, panel wipe, then apply and level panel by panel. |
| Ceramic spray | A spray-and-wipe (or spray-and-rinse) SiO₂ or ceramic product. | Varies. Quan Armor gives no number. Spartan Aqua Guard gives none either. | Minutes per panel on a clean car. |
| Topper / maintenance spray | A lighter SiO₂ layer that goes over a coating to refresh beading. | Spartan SiO2: 3+ months. Reapply every 1–2 months as a topper. | Spray and buff after a wash. |
For a deeper side-by-side on the first two, read ceramic spray vs professional ceramic coating.
Ceramic sprays: the easy way in
Ceramic Spray · Paint (Quan)
Quan Armor Protection Ceramic Shielding $23.99
A professional-grade, user-friendly ceramic spray that bonds directly to the clear coat. It leaves an ultra-slick, hydrophobic shield that repels water, dirt and UV rays, and it enhances gloss and deepens color. Mist a 3x3 ft section, spread, then buff. 32 oz.
Shop NowUse Quan Armor on a clean, dry car that's cool to the touch, out of direct sun. Give it 4–6 hours to cure before it gets wet.
Wet-Applied SiO₂ · Paint, Glass, Trim (Symplex)
Symplex Spartan Aqua Guard SiO2 from $26.49
Built to go on a wet car right after the wash. Symplex lists paint, clear coat, glass, plastic trim, chrome, vinyl and wheels, and sells it as a standalone coating or a topper for existing ceramic coatings. Spray & Rinse, or Spray & Wipe at 1:5.
Shop NowAqua Guard's spray-and-rinse method: work out of direct sun on a surface that isn't hot, wash with a pH-neutral shampoo, leave the car wet, mist 2–4 sprays per panel, then rinse right away with strong water pressure. Keep it dry for 12 hours for best durability.
Bottle coatings: the long haul
Paint Coating · 2–5 Years (CarPro)
CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 (30 ml Kit with Reload) $69.99
CarPro lists paint, wheels, plastics, glass and metals. 70% SiO₂, 1–2 microns per coat, and two coats recommended (three max). The kit includes Reload 100 ml for the topcoat.

Paint Coating · Up to 36 Months (Gyeon)
Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO 30 ml $76.99
Gyeon says one layer is enough for most cars, rated up to 36 months / 40,000 km. Add a second for up to 48 months / 50,000 km. Works on all modern automotive paints.
Shop NowApply CQuartz UK 3.0 out of direct sun, on a surface that isn't hot. Keep Mohs EVO out of direct sun and away from water for the first 12 hours.
Our ceramic coating comparison lines up more bottle coatings, and CQuartz vs Gyeon helps you pick between the two brands.
Is Ceramic Coating Worth It? What It Does and Doesn't Do
Here's what the makers actually claim. For CQuartz UK 3.0, CarPro lists water and dirt repellency, UV protection, and resistance to stains, bird droppings, water spots and traffic film. It also claims "self cleaning" behavior, so the car stays cleaner longer. Gyeon claims self-cleaning properties, UV protection and water repellency for Mohs EVO, plus a pH tolerance of 2–11.
What it won't do matters just as much. None of the coatings in this guide is sold as scratch-proof or chip-proof. CarPro claims "resistance to wash induced marring" and "minor swirl filling" for UK 3.0. That means fewer wash marks, not immunity. If rock chips are the worry, that's what paint protection film is for.
So is it worth it? For a car you plan to keep, wash yourself and park outside in the Florida sun, a coating cuts down how often you're re-protecting the paint. If you'd rather not spend a day on prep, a ceramic spray adds slickness and beading for a lot less work, though neither spray here gives a durability number.
What Can You Ceramic Coat? Surface by Surface
Most "can you ceramic coat ___?" questions have the same answer: yes, with the right product. Paint coatings are built mainly for clear coat, though some also list plastics and glass. Rubber, leather and fabric behave differently, so makers also make separate coatings for them, and for trim and glass.
| Surface | Can you coat it? | What to use (in stock) |
|---|---|---|
| Paint | Yes | Spray: Quan Armor, Symplex Spartan Aqua Guard. Bottle: CQuartz UK 3.0, Gyeon Mohs EVO |
| Plastic and rubber trim | Yes, with a trim product | Symplex Silex Ceramic Trim (quick), CarPro DLUX (up to 2+ years) |
| Wheels and exhaust tips | Yes | CarPro DLUX (rated for temperatures up to 1000°F) |
| Tires | Yes, with a tire coating | CarPro BlackOut 2.0 (about 6 months) |
| Windshield and glass | Yes, with a glass coating | CarPro FlyBy30 (4–5 months), CarPro GForce (12–24 months) |
| Headlights | Yes | CarPro DLight (up to 3 years of UV protection) |
| Matte paint | Only with a matte-safe product (CarPro's US site advises against regular coatings) | CarPro MadMatte (matte spray sealant) |
| PPF and vinyl wraps | Yes, with a film coating | CarPro CQuartz Skin (2+ years) |
| Leather | Yes, with a leather product | Gyeon LeatherCoat (3+ months) |
| Fabric and carpet | Yes, with a fabric coating | CarPro CQuartz Fabric 2.0 (up to 12 months) |
Can You Ceramic Coat Plastic Trim?
Yes. Sun fades trim, and CarPro says DLUX's UV protection helps prevent fading, so it's a useful place to add ceramic protection. You have two levels to choose from: a quick SiO₂ trim treatment you can redo in minutes, or a true trim coating that's rated in years.
Ceramic Trim Treatment · Quick (Symplex)
Symplex Silex Ceramic Trim SiO2 Quartz Treatment from $21.54
A water-based SiO₂ treatment that bonds to exterior plastics, unpainted moldings and rubberized plastics. It dries to a non-greasy OEM satin finish. Spread it on clean, dry trim, let it cure a few minutes, buff lightly, and keep water off for 10 minutes.
Shop NowSymplex doesn't put a number on how long it lasts. Its English page says "weeks of hydrophobic protection," and its Spanish page says months, so plan to reapply it when water stops beading. Symplex also notes it's not meant for leather.
For the long haul, CarPro makes CQuartz DLUX specifically for trim and wheels and rates it at "up to two years or more." CarPro lists plastic, rubber, metal and wheel finishes, plus engine components, headlights, fog lights, tail lights, metal trim, exhaust tips, chrome and plastic wheel wells.
Trim & Wheel Coating · Up to 2+ Years (CarPro)
CarPro CQuartz DLUX Trim & Wheel Coating 30 ml $39.99
Over 50% silica, rated for temperatures up to 1000°F, with UV protection against fading. CarPro says it brings back a deep, rich color on exterior plastics without a greasy finish. About 10 ml covers one vehicle.
Shop NowDoing a fleet or coating trim on customer cars? The DLUX Pro Size 100 ml is $119.99.
Not ready to coat? A trim dressing is the easy middle ground. Symplex makes Plasti-K Xtreme Exterior ($18.74) to revive faded, chalky plastic to an OEM satin, with results Symplex says last for weeks.
Can you use a paint coating on trim?
Some paint coatings list plastics. CarPro includes plastics among the surfaces for CQuartz UK 3.0. For textured trim, a trim coating like DLUX comes with directions written for it: work it evenly into the texture and leave it, with no wipe-off step.
Does ceramic coating restore faded trim?
It can bring back color. CarPro says DLUX "rejuvenates exterior plastics, providing a deep, rich color without a greasy finish." Trim that's chalky and badly sun-damaged may need more work first, and our wheels, tires and trim guide covers dressing versus coating. Either way, coat only trim that's deep-cleaned, because leftover dressing can stop a coating from bonding.
Should you coat brand-new textured trim?
CarPro's US site is careful here: many people coat new textured plastic with DLUX successfully, but do it at your own risk. It gives two reasons. A dealer may have used a heavy silicone dressing that may not fully come off, and that can stop the coating bonding. New plastic may also "gas out" for about a year, and the site believes that gas could get trapped under the coating as tiny bubbles that dull it. In those rare cases, the page says, there's no surefire fix, because a coating is nearly impossible to polish off textured plastic.
Rubber and chrome trim
DLUX covers both. CarPro lists rubber trim (to prevent aging and deterioration), metal trim, chrome and exhaust tips. For tire sidewalls, CarPro makes a separate rubber coating, covered below.
How to ceramic coat plastic trim, step by step
These are CarPro's DLUX directions for plastic, in order.
Pro Tip
Mask the paint edges next to the trim before you start, and wipe off any coating that lands on paint right away. CarPro's UK 3.0 tips warn that coating left on paint hardens and then needs polishing to remove.
Can You Ceramic Coat Matte Paint, Matte Wheels or Wraps?
This is where the advice splits, so read carefully. CarPro's US site advises against "any semi-permanent coating on a matte finish or any finish that you are not able to polish." It gives two reasons. You can't remove a cured coating without polishing, and polishing ruins a matte finish. You also can't polish a matte surface to prep it, so a proper bond isn't guaranteed. CarPro's US site repeats that warning for matte wheels on its DLUX page.
Gyeon takes the opposite approach with a coating built specifically for matte and satin finishes. Q² Matte EVO is described as ceramic protection for matte and satin paint, PPF and vinyl. It's currently sold out at our store.
Until it's back, these two list matte finishes among their uses and are in stock. Know the catch on Skin first. CarPro's US site points out that you can't polish a coating off a matte surface without making it glossy. CarPro says a specialty degreaser removes Skin, but CarPro's US site says it hasn't been able to test that, because the degreaser isn't available in the USA.
Matte Spray Sealant · Paint, PPF, Wraps (CarPro)
CarPro MadMatte Spray Sealant from $4.99
An SiO₂-based ceramic spray sealant made for matte, satin and frozen finishes, including paint, PPF and vinyl wraps, on the body or the wheels. CarPro says it protects without adding gloss, though some surfaces may look slightly richer or darker. About 10% SiO₂. It's a sealant, not a coating.

Shop NowNever polish a matte surface, as CarPro's US site puts it, and skip products made to add gloss. Our full matte paint coating guide covers wash products and what to avoid.
Wheels, Tires, Glass, Headlights, PPF and Interiors
Wheels
DLUX handles wheels too, and CarPro rates it for temperatures up to 1000°F, so exhaust tips are fair game. On painted, clear-coated and chrome wheels, CarPro has you wash, decon, polish as needed and wipe with Eraser. Let it cure 1 minute at 90°F, or up to 8 minutes at 50°F, then wipe it off in a circle until clear. Matte wheels follow the matte rules above.
Tires
Paint coatings don't list tires among their surfaces, so tires get their own coating. CarPro CQuartz BlackOut 2.0 is a tire and rubber coating that CarPro says is far more durable than traditional dressings and 100% dry to the touch, with a stated durability of 6 months. Wash the tires and dry them very well, work it into the sidewall, and let it dry at least 30 minutes. Give it at least 12 hours before bad weather, and keep soaps and chemicals off it for the first 3 days. CarPro says to avoid using it on motorcycle tires. For dressings, see our tire shine guide.
Windshield and glass
Glass gets its own coatings. CarPro FlyBy30 works on all car glass, and CarPro says water repellency on a windshield lasts about 4–5 months, one season. CarPro DQuartz GForce is the long-term option, rated 12–24 months or over 13,000 wiper cycles. Both start with polished glass wiped down with Eraser. For GForce, keep the glass dry 4 hours and skip the wipers for at least 24 if you safely can. More in our windshield rain repellent guide.
Headlights
CarPro CQuartz DLight is a UV-blocking ceramic coating for headlights, PPF and plastics. CarPro says its UV absorbers and light stabilizers protect against yellowing, fading and cracking, for up to 3 years. Keep it out of the elements for 12–36 hours afterward.
PPF and vinyl wraps
Film and wraps get their own coating, made to bond to film. CQuartz Skin is made for paint protection film and vinyl wraps, adheres best to PVC, PU and TPU films, and has an expected durability of 2 years or more. For best results CarPro suggests 2 layers. Keep it out of the elements for 24 hours and away from chemicals for at least 3–5 days.
Leather and fabric
Interior coatings protect against spills and wear. Gyeon Q² LeatherCoat Redefined is a leather sealant made mainly for semi-aniline and nappa leather, with a lifespan of more than 3 months. Clean the leather thoroughly, spread one even layer and wipe off any residue. CarPro's CQuartz Leather 2.0 is a coating rather than a sealant (expected durability 1–2 years), but CarPro labels it a professional product, not for DIY use.
For cloth, CarPro CQuartz Fabric 2.0 goes on convertible tops, fabric seats, headliners, carpets and floor mats. CarPro says it repels water and stains for up to 12 months. Spray it on 100% clean, dry fabric, test a hidden spot first and let it air dry up to 24 hours.
How to Apply a Ceramic Coating to Paint
Start with prep. Gyeon's coating manual calls prep "crucial for the bonding and durability" of a coating, and CarPro calls the Eraser wipe after polishing "critical to ensure durability." Our CQuartz application guide walks through one coating in detail. Here's the general process.
What You'll Need
- Car soap: Quan Pink.
- Iron remover: Quan Purge.
- Clay bar or clay towel for bonded contamination. See how to clay bar a car.
- Polish and a polisher, if the paint has swirls you don't want sealed in.
- Panel wipe: Symplex Look See Control or CarPro Eraser.
- The coating and applicators: Symplex Graphene & Ceramic Coating Applicator or CarPro suede applicators.
- Plenty of clean, short-pile microfiber towels for leveling. CarPro says don't reuse them on paint after buffing off coating.
- Gloves and a mask. Each maker's precautions are in the Read the Label First box below.
Panel Wipe · Pre-Coating Prep (Symplex)

Shop NowPro Tip
Don't coat in direct sun or on hot panels. Both CarPro and Gyeon say so, and in a Florida summer that usually means a garage, early morning or a carport. Watch the temperature too: CarPro lists 40–90°F for UK 3.0.
Ceramic Coating Cure Time: When Can It Get Wet?
Every coating has its own cure window. Rain or a wash too soon is one of the easiest ways to compromise a fresh coating. Here's what each maker says.
| Product | Keep it dry | Washing and chemicals |
|---|---|---|
| Quan Armor | 4–6 hours before water | Not stated |
| Symplex Spartan Aqua Guard | 12 hours for best durability | Not stated |
| Symplex Spartan SiO2 | 3–4 hours; full cure in 24 | Not stated |
| CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 | At least 1 hour (24 is best) | No detergents or chemicals for 5 days |
| Gyeon Mohs EVO | 12 hours, out of direct sun | Wash with a pH-neutral shampoo |
| CarPro DLUX | 1–3 hours; wipe off water in the first 24 | Wash as needed after 3 days |
| CarPro BlackOut 2.0 | At least 12 hours before bad weather | No soaps or chemicals for the first 3 days |
| CarPro CQuartz Skin | Out of the elements 24 hours | No chemicals for at least 3–5 days |
| CarPro GForce | 4 hours; no wipers for at least 24 | Not stated |
If it rains early, don't panic. CarPro's DLUX directions say to wipe water off before it dries during the first 24 hours, and its UK 3.0 directions also say to gently wipe off any water in that window.
How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating
A coating isn't maintenance-free. It's lower-maintenance. Gyeon's advice for Mohs EVO sums up the routine: wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and avoid harsh chemicals. Topping up is optional, to boost water repellency.

- Top up: Symplex Spartan SiO2 goes on a washed, dried panel wiped with an alcohol-based inspection spray. Keep it dry 3–4 hours; it fully cures in 24. Spartan Graphene is the 4+ month version. CarPro pairs CQuartz with Reload 2.0, and Gyeon suggests Q²M WetCoat over Mohs EVO.
- Decon and descale: Quan Purge for iron, and CarPro Descale when hard-water minerals dull the beading.

Common Mistakes, and How to Remove a Ceramic Coating
| Mistake | What happens | How to avoid it |
|---|---|---|
| Skipping the panel wipe | Leftover polishing oils cut durability, per CarPro | Look See Control or Eraser on every panel |
| Leveling too late | Coating hardens into high spots that need polish to remove | Test the flash time on one section first |
| Coating in sun or on hot panels | Flashes too fast to level evenly | Shade, a cool surface, 40–90°F for UK 3.0 |
| Getting it wet too soon | Water dries on a coating that hasn't cured | Follow the maker's dry time |
| Coating matte paint with a gloss coating | Can't be polished off without ruining the finish | Use a matte-specific product only |
| Coating new textured trim with dealer dressing on it | Poor bond or white spots with no surefire fix, per CarPro's US site | Strip the old dressing first, or skip it: CarPro's US site calls coating new trim at your own risk |
Removal is the other half of the "can I" question. Once a paint coating cures, regular washes and cleaners won't take it off. CarPro's UK 3.0 tips say a high spot caught within minutes lifts with a bit more product; after that, it takes a dot of finishing polish, an Eraser or IPA wipe and a re-coat of that area. A full removal from paint generally means polishing the coating off. On textured plastic, CarPro's US site says that's nearly impossible without changing how the plastic looks.
That's the real argument for practicing on something forgiving first. A ceramic spray like Quan Armor goes on a clean, dry, cool car out of direct sun with a light mist, an immediate spread and a buff, with no flash time to wait for.
Read the Label First
- Gloves and a mask for bottle coatings. CarPro's precautions for CQuartz UK 3.0 and DLight call for hand protection and respiratory protection such as a painter's mask. DLUX says to wear gloves and avoid skin and eye contact.
- Iron removers and acid washes: Quan Purge's label calls for gloves and eye protection, and CarPro recommends eye and skin protection with Descale.
- Ventilation for fabric coating: CarPro says to use Fabric 2.0 in a ventilated area with suitable breathing protection.
- California: CarPro Eraser and CQuartz Fabric 2.0 aren't sold for use in California, per CarPro's US site.
- Gyeon coatings: Gyeon's coating manual recommends skin protection and working in a well-ventilated area.
- Shelf life: CarPro says ceramic coatings should be installed within 12 months of purchase.
- Never in direct sun or on hot panels, for every coating and spray in this guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you ceramic coat plastic trim?
Yes. Use a product made for trim. CarPro rates CQuartz DLUX at up to two years or more on trim and wheels, and lists plastic, rubber and metal among its surfaces. Symplex Silex Ceramic Trim is a quicker SiO₂ treatment that Symplex rates at weeks of protection, not years. Clean the trim with an all-purpose cleaner, rinse, dry and wipe it with a panel wipe before you coat it.
Does ceramic coating restore plastic trim?
A trim coating can bring back color. CarPro says DLUX rejuvenates exterior plastics with a deep, rich color and no greasy finish. Badly sun-damaged, chalky trim may need restoring before you coat it; none of the maker pages we checked promise a coating will fix chalking on its own.
Should I ceramic coat brand-new textured trim?
CarPro's US site says many people do it successfully but calls it at your own risk. Leftover dealer dressing can stop the coating from bonding, and new plastic may gas out for about a year and dull the coating. It says there's no surefire fix if that happens.
Can you ceramic coat matte paint?
CarPro's US site advises against any semi-permanent coating on matte or satin, because a cured coating can only be removed by polishing, and polishing makes matte glossy. Gyeon makes Q² Matte EVO specifically for matte and satin paint, PPF and vinyl; it's currently sold out with us. CarPro MadMatte is an in-stock matte spray sealant for paint, PPF and wraps.
Can you ceramic coat matte wheels?
CarPro's US site treats coating matte wheels as at your own risk, and its DLUX directions say never to polish a matte surface. CarPro makes MadMatte for matte, satin and frozen finishes on the body or the wheels, and it protects without adding gloss.
Can you ceramic coat PPF or a vinyl wrap?
Yes, with a film-specific coating. CarPro CQuartz Skin is made for paint protection film and vinyl wraps in matte, satin or gloss, with an expected durability of 2 years or more. On matte or satin film, CarPro's US site says not to use it on any surface that can't be polished until you've mastered the application. CarPro says it adheres best to PVC, PU and TPU films and wraps.
Does ceramic coating prevent scratches?
No. None of the coatings in this guide is sold as scratch-proof. CarPro claims resistance to wash-induced marring and minor swirl filling for CQuartz UK 3.0, which means fewer wash marks, not protection from keys or rock chips.
What is the downside to ceramic coating?
Prep takes time, since the paint should be decontaminated, polished and wiped down first. A cured paint coating generally only comes off by polishing. It won't remove swirls you didn't polish out; at most, CarPro claims minor swirl filling for UK 3.0. And it still needs regular pH-neutral washes, plus an optional topper if you want to boost beading.
How long does ceramic coating take to cure?
It depends on the product. CarPro says to keep CQuartz UK 3.0 dry for at least an hour (24 is best) and away from detergents for 5 days. Gyeon asks for 12 hours out of sun and water for Mohs EVO. DLUX needs 1–3 hours dry, with washing after 3 days. Quan Armor needs 4–6 hours before water.
How long does ceramic coating last?
Makers rate CQuartz UK 3.0 at 2–5 years, Gyeon Mohs EVO at up to 36 months on one layer (48 on two) and DLUX at up to two years or more. Treat those as best cases. Prep, washing habits and sun exposure decide where you land.
Can I ceramic coat my car myself?
Yes. Most coatings in this guide come with DIY directions; the exception is CQuartz Leather 2.0, which CarPro labels not for do-it-yourself use. If you've never coated a car, start with a ceramic spray like Quan Armor to learn the spread-and-buff routine, then move to a bottle coating once you're comfortable leveling panel by panel.
Is ceramic coating better than wax?
A bottle coating is rated to last much longer. It cures and bonds to the surface and makers rate it in years, while wax and most sealants are re-applied in weeks or months. Wax is quicker and more forgiving to apply. Our wax vs sealant guide compares the softer options.
