How Long Does Ceramic Coating Last? (And How to Make It Last Longer)
Ceramic coatings come with a durability rating from their makers, and the six in this guide are rated from 2 years to 5. Treat that number as a best case, not a promise. Whether yours gets there comes down to prep, washing habits and where the car lives, Florida sun included.
Here's what each maker claims, what wears a coating out, and the routine that keeps one working. For soaps, see the best car wash soap for ceramic-coated cars.
Quick Answer
Makers rate the six DIY ceramic coatings in this guide at 2 to 5 years, and that's a best case, not a promise. CarPro rates CQuartz UK 3.0 at 2 to 5 years and Lite 2.0 at 2, and Gyeon gives Q² Mohs EVO up to 36 months on one layer, or 48 on two. Poor prep, harsh chemicals, brush washes and mineral buildup cut that short. A pH-neutral wash like Quan Pink, a topper on its maker's schedule and an occasional mineral-removing wash give a coating its best shot at the top of its range.
How Long Each Coating Is Rated to Last
Here are coatings from our shelves, with each maker's own claim. Read "up to" as the top of the range.
| Coating | Made for | Maker's rating |
|---|---|---|
| CarPro CQuartz UK 3.0 | Paint, wheels, plastics, glass, metals | 2 to 5 years |
| CarPro CQuartz Lite 2.0 | Paint | 2 years |
| Gyeon Q² Mohs EVO | Paint | Up to 36 months / 40,000 km on one layer; 48 months / 50,000 km on two |
| Gyeon Q² Pure EVO | Paint (one-layer coating) | Up to 36 months / 40,000 km |
| CarPro CQuartz DLUX | Trim and wheels | Up to two years or more |
| CarPro CQuartz DLight | Headlights, PPF, plastics, paint | Up to 3 years of UV protection |
Gyeon caps each rating by mileage too: 40,000 km is about 25,000 miles, and 50,000 km is about 31,000.

Shop NowWhat Destroys a Ceramic Coating (or Shortens Its Life)
Poor prep
Gyeon's coating manual calls surface prep "crucial for the bonding and durability" of a coating: decontaminate, strip old wax, polish out defects and fully degrease, a step it calls obligatory. On CQuartz, CarPro calls an Eraser panel wipe after polishing "critical to ensure durability." Our CQuartz how-to covers the prep.
Harsh chemicals
Gyeon keeps it simple for Mohs EVO and Pure EVO: wash with a pH-neutral shampoo and skip harsh chemicals. IGL Coatings, another coating maker, puts it more broadly: harsh chemicals, acidic or alkaline cleaners and abrasive tools "can strip the protective layer."
Brush car washes
IGL's maintenance guide is blunt about automated brush washes: they "can scratch and damage the coating." It points owners to hand or touchless washes instead. Touchless isn't a free pass, though: a separate IGL article warns those bays often use very strong alkaline soaps and powerful degreasers.
Mineral buildup
Hard water leaves minerals on a coating, and you won't always see them as spots. They "clog" the coating, in CarPro's words, so water and dirt don't shed as easily. Leave them long enough and they can etch the surface. Our water spot remover guide has more.
Contamination left to bake on
Bird droppings and tree sap "can degrade the coating if not regularly cleaned," according to IGL. Ford of Europe adds a paint angle: paint softens in intense sun, and grime grabs on as it cools. Its paint manager advises getting droppings off "before it gets too baked on."
Sun and heat
Gtechniq, which also makes coatings, says prolonged UV exposure can degrade a coating over time, and extreme heat can too, especially on cars parked in direct sunlight. IGL also names UV exposure among the factors that "can degrade the coating over time," and Maaco counts Florida among the sunny regions where a car's exterior is "under constant attack from the elements." More in how to protect car paint from sun damage.
Pro Tip
Wash in the shade, early or late in the day, and dry the car before the water dries on its own. Shade helps prevent water spots and streaking, per IGL, and Reset's directions are clear: never let shampoo dry on the surface.

How to Maintain a Ceramic Coating, Step by Step
The Maintenance Wash: pH-Neutral Soaps
Quan Pink, our house pH-neutral soap
Quan is our house brand, and Pink is its concentrated car soap. The safety data sheet calls it a pH-neutral foaming vehicle wash (pH ~7). On the label, it breaks down dirt and grime "without stripping wax or damaging surfaces." To use it, mix 5 ounces in 5 gallons of water, pre-rinse, wash with a clean mitt, rinse completely and dry.

Toppers and Boosters: Recharge the Beading
A topper, or booster, is a sealant made to go over a coating and maintain it.
Symplex Spartan SiO2
Symplex sells Spartan SiO2 as a "maintenance layer for Ceramic or Graphene Coatings," rated 3+ months. It isn't a drying aid. Mist it on a washed, dried panel wiped with an alcohol-based inspection spray, in the shade, then keep it dry 3–4 hours; full cure takes 24. As a topper, reapply every 1–2 months or when beading drops off.
Coating Topper · 3+ Months (Symplex)
Symplex Spartan SiO2 Super Polymer Sealant from $18.83
Water-based SiO2 spray sealant, sold as a maintenance layer over ceramic or graphene coatings. Pint, quart, gallon and 5-gallon.
Shop NowSpartan Graphene (from $22.37) is the 4+ month version, also sold as a maintenance layer over ceramic coatings.
CarPro Reload 2.0
Reload 2.0 was made to maintain CQuartz. It goes on wet or dry, over clean paint that's free of oil, solvents and wax. How often depends on the car: every 3 months as a topper on CarPro's UK 3.0 page, or 3–4 months for a daily driver and 4–6 for a garage queen on its maintenance bundle page.
CQuartz Topper · Wet or Dry
CarPro Reload 2.0 $35.99
SiO2 spray sealant CarPro calls excellent for topping CQuartz. 500 ml.
Shop NowFor its own coatings, Gyeon points to Q²M WetCoat or Q²M Cure as the top-up.
The Symplex Swap
Topping a CQuartz coat? Symplex makes the same kind of topper.

Symplex Spartan SiO2 from $18.83
The 16 oz pint is $18.83; Reload 2.0's 500 ml (16.9 oz) is $35.99. Coverage may differ, so compare the cost per car, not per bottle.

Symplex Spartan Aqua Guard SiO2 from $26.49
Spray and rinse on a wet car, then keep it dry 12 hours. Symplex sells it as a maintenance topper for existing ceramic coatings.
Symplex says these are crafted in Florida.
Got a car that was never coated? Quan Armor (32 oz, $23.99) is our house ceramic spray. Per its label, it bonds directly to the clear coat, creating an ultra-slick, hydrophobic shield that repels water, dirt and UV rays. Apply it to a clean, dry, cool car out of direct sunlight, and give it 4–6 hours before water.
The Occasional Deep Clean: Iron Decon and Descale
An iron decon every 3 to 6 months, after the wash, is on CarPro's CQuartz UK 3.0 care list. Quan Purge (from $24.99) is our house iron remover. Its label calls it pH-neutral and reactive, and it turns purple as it breaks down ferrous metals. Spray it on a wet, cool surface, let it dwell 2–3 minutes and rinse thoroughly.
Symplex Iron Wheel Remover (from $23.90) is another option. Symplex says it's safe on all car surfaces and won't deteriorate clear coats. More picks in our iron decon guide.
CarPro Descale for mineral buildup
Descale was built "from the ground up for reviving ceramic coatings that have had minerals build up on them." It's an acid wash, which may sound like the acidic cleaners IGL warns against, but it's only mildly acidic at pH 6. By CarPro's account, it won't strip coatings, though it can take off most waxes. Dilute it 1:100 in a bucket or 1:10 in a foam sprayer, let it dwell without drying, and rinse well. Save it for mineral buildup, not every wash; CarPro's US distributor recommends it for coated cars with heavy mineral deposits and for quarterly maintenance washes.
Revives Clogged Coatings · pH 6
CarPro Descale Acid Wash $21.99
Acid wash designed to remove mineral buildup from ceramic coatings. 500 ml.

Clogged or Worn Out? How to Tell
A tired coating shows it in the water first: weak beading, water and dirt that won't shed, a rougher feel, less gloss. Besides wear, CarPro names two causes: soap residue and minerals.
| What you see | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Weak beading and dust sticking right after a wash | Soap residue, which CarPro says can temporarily mess up the beading | Rewash with a pH-neutral soap like Quan Pink and rinse completely, as its label directs. Reset, per CarPro, rinses off without leaving soap residue. |
| A rough feel, water spots, water and dirt not shedding | Mineral buildup clogging the coating | A CarPro Descale wash |
| Still weak after Descale | The topper, or the coating itself, wearing down | Top it with Spartan SiO2 or Reload 2.0 |
Will Descale bring the beading back? CarPro's answer: "That depends on the cause of the missing hydrophobics. If it is due to mineral buildup on the coating then yes, this will solve the beading!" So go in order: a thorough wash, Descale, topper. Still no beading near the end of its rating? It may be time to recoat.
Safety Note: Read Every Label
- CarPro: hand protection and a painter's mask for CQuartz UK 3.0, Lite 2.0 and DLight (a pressurized bottle, so point it away from your face), gloves for DLUX, and eye and skin protection plus a test spot for Descale. Reset suggests gloves for sensitive skin.
- Gyeon coatings: the manual recommends skin protection and a well-ventilated work area.
- Quan Pink, Armor and Purple: the Pink and Armor labels warn they may be harmful if swallowed or inhaled and cause mild skin irritation, and Pink's tells you to avoid contact with eyes and skin. The Armor and Purple safety data sheets call for solvent-resistant gloves and splash-proof eyewear.
- Quan Purge: the label warns of skin irritation and possible allergic skin reaction. Wear gloves and eye protection, avoid breathing the mist, and keep it off anodized aluminum and surfaces that aren't clear-coated.
- Symplex Spartan SiO2: per its safety data sheet, it doesn't meet hazard classification criteria, and the sheet still calls for gloves and eye protection.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does ceramic coating last on a car?
Up to its maker's rating at best, with good prep and upkeep. For CQuartz UK 3.0, CarPro's rating is 2 to 5 years; for Lite 2.0, it's 2. Gyeon rates Q² Mohs EVO for up to 36 months (40,000 km) on one layer and 48 months on two.
What destroys ceramic coating?
Harsh chemicals, brush car washes, mineral buildup, contamination left to bake on and long UV exposure. Gyeon warns against harsh chemicals, IGL Coatings against brush washes, and CarPro against mineral deposits that clog a coating and can etch it. Gtechniq adds that prolonged UV exposure can degrade a coating over time.
What are the disadvantages of ceramic coating?
It won't make paint damage-proof: Gtechniq, another coating maker, says a coating is "not impervious to all damage and wear." Prep takes work, and Gyeon calls full degreasing obligatory. Per CarPro, leftover coating hardens and needs polishing to remove, and so does DLUX once it's on. Bottles have a shelf life, too: CarPro's advice is to use a coating within 12 months of buying it.
Can I run my ceramic coated car through a car wash?
Yes, if it's touchless and the coating has cured. IGL Coatings warns that brush washes can scratch and damage a coating and that touchless bays often use very strong alkaline soaps, and it still suggests a careful hand wash for the longest life. Give a fresh coat 5 days without detergents for CQuartz (CarPro), or 14 without strong ones for Gyeon's Mohs EVO and Pure EVO.
How much does a 5-year ceramic coating cost?
This guide covers DIY coatings, so we won't guess at a shop's install price. CQuartz UK 3.0 is the only coating here rated as high as 5 years, the top of CarPro's 2-to-5-year range. By CarPro's figure of about 10 ml per coat, give or take, a 30 ml bottle covers around three coats; it recommends two. The kit's price is on its card above. Budget for prep too: iron remover, clay, polish and a panel wipe.
How long does ceramic coating last on wheels?
Up to two years or more for CQuartz DLUX, CarPro's trim and wheel coating, which is built to withstand temperatures up to 1000°F. CQuartz UK 3.0 lists wheels among its surfaces too.
How long does ceramic coating last on headlights?
Up to 3 years of UV protection for CQuartz DLight, by CarPro's rating. Per AAA, plastic headlights fog from UV oxidation; it recommends a lens UV sealant after a restoration and notes cars parked in the sun may need it redone more often.
How do you maintain a ceramic coating?
Wash every 2–4 weeks, as IGL suggests, with a pH-neutral soap like Quan Pink, and dry it fully. Top it up on the maker's schedule: every 1–2 months for Symplex Spartan SiO2 or every 3 months for CarPro Reload 2.0. Run an iron decon every 3 to 6 months on CarPro's UK 3.0 schedule, and use Descale when minerals dull the beading.
