Wax vs Sealant: Which One Should You Use on Your Car?
Wax and sealant do the same job. They sit on your clear coat, bead water and take the wear so the paint doesn't. The difference is what they're made of, how long they last and how they look. Every product rating below is the maker's own.
Quick Answer
Use a sealant for longer protection and a wax for a warmer glow, or layer both with the sealant first; a ceramic coating outlasts either, but it takes more prep and costs more.
In the Symplex line, that means P2 Synthetic Ultra as the base, rated for 6–8 months, with Ultra Wax UP3 or G5 Carnauba Paste Wax on top, each rated for 4–6 months. Symplex manufactures in Orlando, and its range runs from a 1–2 month express sealant up to P2.
What's the Difference Between Wax and Sealant?
Wax starts with carnauba, a natural wax from the leaves of a Brazilian palm. People buy it for the look, a warm, deep glow. Sealant is synthetic: man-made polymers built to hold on longer. That's the traditional split. Wax for looks, sealant for life.
The line has blurred, though. All three Symplex waxes are hybrids that blend carnauba with resin, and it shows in the ratings. Symplex rates Cherry Gloss at 3–4 months and pitches it as an upgrade for detailers who want more durability than liquid sealants. Its entry-level G5 Liquid Sealant is rated 1–2 months. So read the rating, not just the word on the label.
The top of the range still belongs to a sealant. P2 is 100% synthetic cross-linking polymers. Symplex calls it the “top-tier protection solution” in its waxes and sealants, and it's the only one here rated past six months.
Wax vs Sealant vs Ceramic Coating at a Glance
| Type | Durability | Look | Application | Cure / dry | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wax | Symplex's carnauba-resin hybrids: 3–6 months | Warm, deep glow | Thin coat by hand; let it haze, then buff | Hazes in about 2–5 minutes; keep dry at least 30 minutes (G5 Paste) to 12–24 hours (UP3) | From $14.11 (Cherry Gloss pint) |
| Sealant | Symplex's range: 1–2 months (G5 Liquid) to 6–8 months (P2) | Slick, high gloss; Symplex calls P2's a “wet-look” finish | Thin coat by hand, or spray and wipe (Spartan) | Hazes in 2–10 minutes by hand; keep dry 3–4 hours (Spartan) to at least 12 hours (P2) | From $18.83 (Spartan SiO2 pint) |
| Ceramic coating | Typically rated in years, not months | Glassy gloss, very slick | Correct and panel-wipe the paint, then level panel by panel; often a pro install | Set by each coating maker; follow it to the letter | Highest, especially pro-installed |
Ratings are each maker's own. Washing, weather and prep move them, so treat them as rough guides.

Shop NowPaint Sealants: P2 Synthetic Ultra and G5 Liquid
P2 is the one to beat. Symplex rates it for 6–8 months and says it protects against UV, road grime and harsh detergents. It also asks for real prep: a clean surface, with a clay bar and paint correction recommended “for maximum bonding.” Apply a small amount with a foam or microfiber pad in circular motions, let it haze 5–10 minutes, buff, and keep it away from water for at least 12 hours.
G5 Liquid Sealant is the quick one. Symplex calls it the entry-level step, rated 1–2 months, and aims it at express details, maintenance jobs and customer handovers. Wash and dry the car, apply a thin coat, let it haze 2–5 minutes and buff.

Spreads easily, dries quickly and buffs off with minimal effort, per Symplex. Safe on clear coat and single-stage paint.
Shop NowSpray-On Sealants: Spartan SiO2 and Spartan Graphene
If you'd rather spray than haze and buff, use Spartan. Both are water-based sealants for paint, glass, plastics and trim. Prep still counts: wash and dry, decontaminate if needed, and wipe down with an alcohol-based inspection spray like Symplex Look See Control. Work in the shade on a cool surface. Mist 2–3 sprays per panel, spread with one microfiber in a crosshatch and buff with a second. Keep it dry for 3–4 hours. The full cure takes 24.
Spartan SiO2 is rated for 3+ months. Spartan Graphene is rated for 4+ months, with a refresh every 2–3 months or after strong detergents. Symplex also sells both as a maintenance layer over ceramic or graphene coatings.

Symplex Spartan Graphene from $22.37
Graphene, silica and cross-linking polymers. Symplex says the graphene adds durability and chemical resistance and cuts water spotting. Pint, quart, gallon and 5-gallon pail.
Shop NowWhere a Ceramic Coating Fits
A ceramic coating is a different class of product. It cures into a hard, durable layer, and coating makers typically rate them in years, not months. The trade-off is prep and price: correct and wipe down the paint first and level each panel as you go, or pay a pro. We cover that side in Ceramic Spray vs Professional Ceramic Coating and our 2026 ceramic coating comparison.
A ceramic spray skips that install work. It sprays on and buffs off like a sealant. Our top pick in the category comes from our own Quan line.

Shade, a cool panel and a thin coat. Symplex's directions call for all three. Spartan goes on “in the shade on a cool surface,” and every hand-applied product here says to go thin or use a small amount. A heavier coat doesn't buy you more protection. It just gives you more to buff off.

Frequently Asked Questions
What goes first, wax or sealant?
Sealant first, then wax. That's standard detailing practice. The sealant goes on clean, bare paint so it can bond, and the wax sits on top. Symplex says its Ultra Wax UP3 can go over sealants or existing coatings.
Can I put wax over sealant?
Yes. It's the usual way to layer them. Let the sealant cure first. P2 asks for at least 12 hours away from water, so plan the wax for the next day. The reverse, sealant over wax, is generally avoided, because the wax keeps the sealant off the paint it's meant to bond to.
Should I wax or seal my car?
Seal it for the longest protection, wax it for the warmest look. For a daily driver parked outside in Florida, we'd seal it. For a show or weekend car, wax it, or do both: sealant first, wax on top.
When should you not wax a car?
Not in direct sun or on a hot panel, and not on a dirty or wet car. G5 Paste's directions call for a surface that's clean, dry and cool to the touch, and G5 Liquid's say not to apply it under direct sunlight or on hot surfaces. Hold off if rain is due inside the wax's dry time: 30 minutes for G5 Paste, 12–24 hours for UP3. On fresh paint, wait until your body shop says it's cured.
Should I wax or seal after a clay bar?
Seal it, ideally the same day. Claying tends to take old protection off with the contamination, and bare paint is what a sealant wants. Symplex recommends clay and paint correction before P2 for maximum bonding. Wax on top afterward if you want the glow.
What's the difference between spray wax and sealant?
They do different jobs. A spray wax is a quick gloss boost between full coats, and a sealant is the base layer. If you want a sealant that sprays on, Symplex rates Spartan SiO2 for 3+ months and Spartan Graphene for 4+.
Is a ceramic coating better than wax or sealant?
It lasts longer. Coating makers typically rate them in years, not months. It also takes more prep and money: plan on paint correction and a panel wipe, or a pro install. If you'd rather skip the install work, look at a ceramic spray. Ours is Quan Armor Protection.
Is a sealer the same as a sealant?
Yes. The two words are used interchangeably. Symplex even calls P2 a “Paint Protector Sealer.”
