Symplex Body Shop Compounds — Cut 7, Cut 8 and Cut 9

Symplex body shop compounds carry a cut number instead of a marketing word, and the number is the whole specification. Turbo X1 is Cut 7 for moderate defects and finer sanding marks, Piranha X1 is Cut 8 and is the one Symplex positions as its true one-step, and Nitro X1 is Cut 9 for heavy sanding scratches on fresh refinish work. Higher number, harder cut. You are picking a point on a scale rather than comparing one bottle that says "heavy" to another that says "ultra".

All three run the same underlying chemistry — Symplex's Ultimate Premium Abrasives in a diminishing abrasive system, so the compound starts by cutting and ends by refining as the abrasives break down. All are built for rotary or forced rotation, not a free-spinning DA; if you run a DA, use the Dual Action line instead. Every compound ships in pint, quart and gallon, and Symplex lists them safe on automotive paint, clear coat and fresh refinish work.

How to Pick a Cut Number

Pick the lowest number that still clears your worst defect in one pass. Going harder than you need does not save time — it buys you a longer refining stage afterwards, and on dark or soft paint that refining stage is where the job is won or lost. The pad matters as much as the bottle: Turbo and Piranha are rated for wool or foam, but at Cut 9 the pad is part of the cut, so Nitro is listed for wool. And whichever number you land on, budget for the refining step — aggressive compounding leaves holograms and buffer trails that look fine under shop lights and obvious in the sun.

The Body Shop Range

  • Turbo X1 — Cut 7, the medium one-step. The entry point, and for a lot of work also the finish line. Levels sanding marks and moderate defects, then refines as the abrasives collapse, leaving the least work behind it. Wool or foam.
  • Piranha X1 — Cut 8, the true one-step. A real step up in aggression that still refines enough to skip a dedicated polishing stage on most colours. Low dust and easy wipe-off for production work. On black you will likely still want the refiner. Wool or foam.
  • Nitro X1 — Cut 9, the high cut. Built to level heavy sanding scratches and severe defects on fresh refinish at production speed. This is the bottle for a panel that has been sanded, not a car that has been washed badly. Wool pad.
  • Micro SHR — the refining step. Precision-milled diminishing micro-abrasives on a foam finishing pad, run on a DA or forced rotation. Clears the holograms, buffer trails and micro-haze compounding leaves. On dark and soft paint, treat it as mandatory.
  • The Rhino Production pair — throughput work. Rhino Production Rubbing Compound is built around speed for shops measuring work in panels per hour, and Rhino Production Machine Glaze is the finishing half that clears the machine marks fast work leaves.
  • Look See Control Prep — the panel wipe. An alcohol-based inspection cleaner that strips polishing oils so you inspect the real surface instead of the filled version. Also the required prep step before any coating goes on.

Symplex Compound Comparison

Compound Cut What It Clears Pad
Turbo X1 7 Sanding marks and moderate defects Wool or foam
Piranha X1 8 Heavier sanding marks a medium cut will not touch Wool or foam
Nitro X1 9 Heavy sanding scratches, severe defects Wool
Micro SHR Refine Holograms, buffer trails, compounding haze Foam finishing

The Pads That Run Them

Body shop work is 8-inch work. The Pad Extreme 100% Twisted Wool Double-Sided 8" is the throughput pad — wool cuts faster and runs cooler than foam on heavy correction, and the double-sided construction means you flip rather than swap when a face loads up. The single-sided wool covers standard rotary work in 6" and 7.5", and the 8" Finishing Foam at 80 PPI handles the refining stage across large flat panels. Smaller machines and the Euro foam range live in Symplex Pads, Plates & Accessories.

Symplex Body Shop Compound FAQs

What does the cut number mean on a Symplex compound?

It is a position on a hardness-of-cut scale. Cut 7 (Turbo X1) is medium, Cut 8 (Piranha X1) is a true one-step, Cut 9 (Nitro X1) is high cut. Higher number, harder cut. The number replaces the usual adjectives so you can compare products directly instead of guessing whether one brand's "heavy" clears 1500-grit sanding marks.

If I only buy one Symplex compound, which one?

Piranha X1 Cut 8. It covers the widest band of real-world defects, and it is easier to slow a compound down with a softer pad than to make a medium cut do work it cannot do.

Can I use these on a dual action polisher?

They are built for rotary or forced rotation, not a free-spinning DA. On a standard DA you will not generate the cut the product is formulated around. Use the Dual Action Medium Cut or Dual Action Heavy Cut instead — those are engineered for DA and forced-rotation machines and give rotary-grade correction with less hologram risk.

Do I still need a refining step after a one-step compound?

On most colours, Cut 8 finishes clean enough to move on from — that is what "one-step" means here. On soft, dark paint, black especially, plan on Micro SHR afterwards. Holograms hide under shop lights and appear in daylight, so inspect with Look See Control Prep before you call the panel finished.

Are they safe on fresh paint?

Yes — all three are listed safe on automotive paint, clear coat and fresh refinish work, which is what the body shop range is built for. Follow your paint manufacturer's flash and cure guidance before machine polishing a fresh repair.

What is the difference between the X1 compounds and the Rhino Production pair?

The X1 range is graded by cut so you can match the compound to the defect. The Rhino pair is graded by throughput — a quick-cutting production compound plus a machine glaze to finish — for shops that run the same process on every car and care most about panels per hour.
