Symplex Polishing Pads, Backing Plates & Accessories

Symplex polishing pads are graded by PPI — pores per inch — which is the number that actually predicts how a foam pad behaves. The Euro Foam range runs Blue at 70 PPI (the coarsest, heaviest cut), Yellow at 85 PPI (the balanced medium) and White at 95 PPI (the finest, for swirl-free gloss). All three use high-density reticulated polyester open-cell European foam with a protective Contour-Edge geometry that spreads pressure evenly so you can work body lines without burning an edge. Alongside the foam sit 100% twisted natural wool for heavy cutting, a wool/foam hybrid that splits the difference, flexible backing plates in 5/8" and 14mm thread, a zinc adapter for double-sided pads, foam applicators and edgeless microfiber. Pair them with the Symplex compounds and polishes they were built around.

PPI Explained: Why the Pore Count Sets the Cut

A lower PPI number means a coarser, more open cell structure. Coarser foam presents more edges to the paint and holds product differently, which is where cutting power comes from — so the 70 PPI Blue cuts hardest and the 95 PPI White cuts least. The trade is finish quality: the tighter 95 PPI cell structure is what produces swirl-free gloss and high D.O.I. (Distinction of Image), the property that separates a finished panel from a merely corrected one. The practical rule is to pick your compound first, then pick the softest pad that still lets that compound clear the defect — you can always add cut with a coarser pad, but you cannot un-haze a panel by wishing.

Backing Plates, Threads and the Adapter Nobody Mentions

Backing plates come in 5/8" and 14mm thread — check your machine before ordering, because the two look similar and neither will start on the wrong spindle. Size the plate smaller than the pad: the 5" Flex plate is the correct pairing for 6.5" pads, giving the pad the overhang it needs to flex at the edges instead of transmitting the plate's rigid rim into the paint. The 6" Flex plate is the general-purpose choice, with a flexible body that absorbs heat and follows panel contours. The 3" rotary plate makes pillar, bumper and tight-panel correction possible without switching to a dedicated mini polisher.

If you run the 8" double-sided wool pad, you also want the zinc double-sided pad adapter. It creates clearance between the pad and the polisher body — without it the unused face rubs against the machine and wears out long before the face you are actually working with.

Towels and Applicators

Two edgeless microfibers cover opposite jobs. The Ultra Plush Blue at 400+ GSM is the drying and final-buff towel — 16" x 24", deep pile that holds water and keeps grit away from paint. The Premium White at 350+ GSM is super-short pile for removal work: levelling coatings, wiping sealant, buffing polish residue, where a plush towel grabs and smears. Both are edgeless, so there is no stitched border to mark paint. For application, the red foam applicator handles waxes, sealants and dressings, and the coating applicator adds a hydrophobic barrier layer that stops coating soaking through to your fingers mid-install.

Which Symplex pad should I use with which polish?

Blue 70 PPI with a heavy cut such as Dual Action Heavy Cut; Yellow 85 PPI with Medium Cut, which is the combination that stays on the machine for most single-stage work; White 95 PPI with Finish Pro+ or Micro SHR as the last machine step. For body shop compounding, wool.

Wool or foam for heavy correction?

Wool cuts faster and runs cooler than foam on heavy work, which is why body shops use it. The cost is a longer refining stage afterwards. The Pad Flex Hybrid exists for exactly that trade-off — wool cutting rate with foam finishing control, for jobs where pure wool cuts faster than you can refine and foam cannot keep up with the defects.

What size backing plate do I need?

Smaller than your pad. A 5" plate runs 6.5" pads correctly; a 6" plate suits larger pads and general work; a 3" plate is for spot repair and tight areas. The overhang lets the pad edge flex rather than driving the plate's rim into the paint — which is where most burnt edges come from. Check thread too: Symplex plates ship in 5/8" and 14mm.

Do these pads fit dual action and rotary machines?

The Euro Foam range works on dual action, forced rotation and rotary machines. The wool pads are rotary and forced-rotation products. Match the plate thread to your machine and the plate diameter to your pad, and the pads themselves are cross-compatible.

How do I clean and look after them?

Clean pads on the fly while you work and wash them before the compound dries in — the Euro foam is built for heat management and easy cleaning, but cured compound in the cell structure permanently changes how a pad cuts.
