Non-Acid Wheel Cleaner
—
Our Picks and How to Use Them
Non-acid wheel cleaner takes brake dust and road grime off your wheels without the strong acids that acid wheel cleaners use. Our top pick is Quan Brown, a chocolate-brown non-acid wheel cleaner for factory-painted, clear-coated and chrome rims. Mix 1 part product to 4 parts water, spray it on cool wheels, wait 30–60 seconds and rinse. Don't use Quan Brown on uncoated polished aluminum or anodized wheels.
What Is Non-Acid Wheel Cleaner?
It's a wheel cleaner that does its work without acid. Acid wheel cleaners use acids such as hydrofluoric or sulfuric acid to cut heavy buildup. Non-acid cleaners skip them.
Most non-acid cleaners are alkaline, which means high pH. Quan Brown is pH 13–14 according to its Safety Data Sheet, and Symplex describes Ultimate as "advanced alkaline surfactant technology." So non-acid doesn't mean pH-neutral, and it doesn't mean safe on every finish.
For regular cleaning of factory-painted, clear-coated and chrome wheels, start with non-acid. Acid wheel cleaners are for heavy-duty jobs: Quan AcidX, a heavy-duty acid wheel cleaner, lists hydrofluoric and sulfuric acid on its Safety Data Sheet and has a pH below 1. Our guide to acid vs. acid-free wheel cleaners covers the difference.
- ✓ No hydrofluoric or sulfuric acid
- ✓ Most are alkaline: Quan Brown is pH 13–14
- ✓ Non-acid is not the same as pH-neutral
- ✓ Everyday pick for factory-painted, clear-coated and chrome rims
Non-Acid Doesn't Mean Safe on Every Wheel
Strong alkaline cleaners can still harm some finishes, so read the label before you spray. Quan Brown's label says not to use it on uncoated polished aluminum or anodized wheels. Even Quan Purge, a pH-neutral iron remover, says to avoid anodized aluminum and surfaces that aren't clear-coated.
- Bare polished aluminum or anodized wheels: wash them like paint with a car soap such as Quan Pink, which its label calls safe for all exterior surfaces.
- Ceramic-coated wheels: for routine washes, use a ceramic shampoo like Quan Purple, which is made for coated vehicles, and follow your coating's care instructions.
- Hot wheels: never. Both Quan and Symplex say to work on wheels that are cool to the touch, and not to let the cleaner dry.
The Non-Acid Wheel Cleaners We Recommend
Our two favorite non-acid wheel cleaners, plus an iron remover for when a wheel cleaner isn't enough.
Our Non-Acid Picks Compared
Quan Brown mixes 1 part product to 4 parts water and dwells 30–60 seconds. Symplex Ultimate mixes up to 1 part to 3 parts water for routine cleaning, or 1:1 to straight for heavy grime; brush it in (Symplex highly recommends it) and allow an optional 1–2 minute dwell. Quan Purge is a pH-neutral iron remover: spray it on a wet, cool surface and let it dwell 2–3 minutes.

Non-Acid Wheel Cleaning Tips
Short advice from the labels and makers.
Speckles after washing? Check for iron
If wheels still look speckled after a non-acid wash, that's often embedded iron. Spray Quan Purge on a wet, cool wheel, let it dwell 2–3 minutes and watch for purple where it breaks down iron, then rinse.
Shop Quan PurgeGloves and eye protection
Quan Brown is strongly alkaline (pH 13–14 per its SDS). Both makers say to wear gloves and eye protection, and Quan Brown's label says to use it only in a well-ventilated area and never to mix it with other chemicals or cleaners.
