CarPro Eraser next to Symplex Look See Control, Gyeon Q²M Prep and Koch-Chemie Panel Prep Spray

CarPro Eraser Alternatives: Look See Control, Gyeon Prep, Koch Panel Prep Spray and IPA

CarPro Eraser is CarPro's panel wipe: spray it on after polishing to strip the oils, see what you actually fixed, and leave clean paint for a coating to bond to. It's also $89.99 a gallon. Here's what else does the job, how each one goes on, and what each costs by the ounce.

Quick Answer

Swap CarPro Eraser for Symplex Look See Control. It's a ready-to-use, alcohol-based spray-and-wipe inspection cleaner made for the same two jobs: showing you what your polishing really did, and prepping paint for a coating, PPF or sealant. By the gallon it's $35.32, about $0.28 an ounce, against about $0.70 for Eraser. In the small bottles the two cost about the same, so the saving is in the bigger sizes. Stay with CarPro Eraser if you want the anti-static finish CarPro builds in.

What Eraser Does

CarPro calls Eraser a panel wipe and a polish, oil and dust remover, designed for the complete removal of polishing oils, both for inspection and before any coating, wax or sealant. Per CarPro, a special blend of surfactants dissolves the oils and pulls them into the towel, and anti-static components resist dust after wiping, so the paint stays dust-free while you coat. It has no silicone, it's safe in paint shops and body shops, and CarPro lists it at pH 7 with a pleasing scent.

The method: fold a microfiber into an 8-inch square, spray a 2–3 square foot area plus a spritz on the towel, and wipe right away. Finish with a second towel and a spritz of Eraser. It's $15.99 for 500 ml (about $0.95 an ounce), $22.99 for a liter ($0.68) and $89.99 for a 128 oz gallon ($0.70), with a 50 ml sample at $3.99. The liter is a touch cheaper per ounce than the gallon.

Best Value · Like-for-Like — Symplex Look See Control

Look See Control is Symplex's panel wipe, and Symplex manufactures in Orlando. Symplex describes it as a professional-grade, alcohol-based spray-and-wipe inspection cleaner that removes dust, polishing oils and compound residue, so defects, sanding marks and holograms show before final finishing. It's ready to use, silicone-free and body shop safe. Symplex lists it for post-polishing inspection, prep before a ceramic coating, PPF or sealant, and a final wipe before touch-up or refinishing.

Shake it, mist it onto the panel or a clean microfiber, and wipe gently, flipping the towel often so you don't put the residue back. Repeat on heavy residue, and move on once the surface is clean and dry. Its safety data sheet lists pH 7.6.

Symplex writes it into its own directions, too. Finesse, its primer polish, starts with Look See to clear polishing oils and compound residue, and the Spartan SiO2 sealant calls for an alcohol-based inspection spray after the wash.

It's $14.99 for a 16 oz pint, $16.82 for a quart, $35.32 for a gallon and $147.21 for a 5-gallon pail. The quart is $1.83 more than the pint for twice the liquid. By the gallon it's about $0.28 an ounce, and by the pail $0.23, against $0.70 for Eraser. Two gallons of Look See cost less than one gallon of Eraser.

Also Anti-Static — Gyeon Q²M Prep

Gyeon calls Q²M Prep a dedicated pre-coating degreaser for oily residues, polishing oils and old wax. It says Prep removes the majority of polishing fillers and leaves a clean, anti-static surface for the coating to bond to. Gyeon lists its IPA percentage at over 50%.

Spray it heavily onto the panel or a towel, wipe thoroughly, and follow with a second towel. Repeat on heavily polished areas, then wait 5–10 minutes before you coat. We carry the 500 ml at $22.99, about $1.36 an ounce.

For Paint, Plastic and Metal — Koch-Chemie Panel Prep Spray

Koch-Chemie's Panel Preparation Spray reads a lot like Look See. Koch calls it a control spray: an alcohol-based, ready-to-use cleaner that removes oils, waxes and polish residues while you check the paint for holograms and scratches. Koch lists it for prep before all types of coatings and sealants, on solvent-resistant paints, plastics and metals. Use it undiluted, wipe it off with a clean, dry microfiber, and check color fastness and material compatibility first. It's $18.99 for 500 ml, about $1.12 an ounce.

What About a Plain IPA Panel Wipe?

Isopropyl alcohol cut with water is the traditional panel wipe. CarPro itself says an IPA-and-water mix is what the majority of the industry used to strip polish residue and fillers. CarPro's case for Eraser is that IPA loosens oil but can spread it around or redeposit it as you wipe, and that Eraser's patented formula cleans better.

Two of the bottles here are IPA-based anyway. Gyeon lists Prep at over 50% IPA, and the safety data sheet for Koch's spray lists 25% to 50% propan-2-ol, which is isopropyl alcohol. Look See is alcohol-based too, but its safety sheet lists n-propyl alcohol rather than isopropyl, and Symplex calls the formula lubricated.

Side by Side

Product What the maker calls it How it goes on Per oz, small bottle Per oz, gallon
CarPro Eraser Panel wipe; polish, oil and dust remover Spray the area and towel, wipe at once, second towel $0.95 (500 ml) $0.70 ($0.68 by the liter)
Symplex Look See Control Alcohol-based inspection cleaner Mist panel or towel, wipe gently, flip the towel often $0.94 (16 oz) $0.28 ($0.23 by the pail)

Koch-Chemie Panel Prep Spray Alcohol-based control spray Undiluted; wipe off with a clean, dry microfiber $1.12 (500 ml) Not carried

Per-ounce figures use our shelf prices, with 500 ml as 16.9 oz. Gyeon Prep and Koch's spray cost more per ounce than Eraser in the 500 ml bottles we carry. If the goal is to spend less, Look See is the swap that does it.

Put it in cars. Gyeon budgets 150 ml of Prep per car. At that rate, a wipe-down costs about $1.40 with Look See and about $3.57 with Eraser, both bought by the gallon.

Pro Tip

Turn the towel to a clean side often. Symplex says to flip it frequently so you don't put residue back, CarPro says to flip and change towels often, and CarPro and Gyeon both finish with a second towel. A loaded towel just moves oil around.

Safety: all four contain alcohol, so read the label first. Per their safety data sheets, Eraser and Gyeon Prep are flammable liquids and Koch's spray is highly flammable, so keep all three away from heat and sparks. Koch says to use its spray only outdoors or in a well-ventilated area. Look See's sheet warns of serious eye damage, so wear gloves and eye protection.

When to Stay With Eraser

There are real reasons to keep Eraser. CarPro says it leaves an anti-static surface that resists dust while you coat, and Look See's copy doesn't make that claim. If you coat with CarPro's own products, Eraser is the prep CarPro pairs with them. And if you only prep a car or two a year, the savings are small: the 500 ml costs about the same per ounce as Look See's pint, and there's a 50 ml sample to try. CarPro also lists a pleasing scent, though Look See's safety sheet lists one too: green apple.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a panel wipe actually do?

It strips the polishing oils and fillers that can hide what you didn't fix. Symplex says Look See reveals the true paint condition after correction, so defects, sanding marks and holograms show before you finish. It also leaves clean paint for a coating or sealant to bond to.

Is Look See Control the same as CarPro Eraser?

No, but they do the same two jobs: inspection after polishing and prep before a coating or sealant. Both are silicone-free and body shop safe. Eraser has anti-static components, per CarPro, while Symplex also lists Look See for PPF prep and touch-up. By the gallon, Look See costs about 40% of what Eraser does.

CarPro Eraser vs Gyeon Prep: what's the difference?

Gyeon calls Q²M Prep a pre-coating degreaser and lists it at over 50% IPA. CarPro says Eraser uses a special blend of surfactants. Both claim an anti-static finish, and Gyeon asks you to wait 5–10 minutes before coating. In 500 ml bottles, Prep runs about $1.36 an ounce and Eraser about $0.95.

Can I use plain IPA as a panel wipe?

You can. CarPro says an IPA-and-water mix is what the majority of the industry used. Its case against IPA is that it loosens oil but can spread it around or redeposit it as you wipe. Whatever you use, flip the towel often and finish with a clean one.

How long should I wait after a panel wipe before coating?

Go by the maker. Gyeon says to wait 5–10 minutes after Prep, and Symplex says to move on once the surface is clean and dry. CarPro's Eraser directions don't give a wait time, so follow your coating's instructions.

Do I need a panel wipe before a spray sealant?

Symplex's own sealant directions include one: Spartan SiO2 starts with a wash, a dry, decon if needed and an alcohol-based inspection spray. CarPro says Eraser prepares paint for ceramic coatings, sealants and waxes, and Gyeon says to use Prep before any ceramic coating or sealant.
