Ceramic Coating for Matte Paint
—
and Matte Wraps
Matte paint, satin wraps and matte PPF need protection made for matte. Wax, polish and gloss products can leave shiny spots, and you can't polish a matte finish to fix them. Our pick for matte paint is Gyeon Q² Matte EVO, a ceramic coating Gyeon designed for matte and satin paint, PPF and vinyl. For wraps and PPF there's CarPro CQuartz Skin, and for quick upkeep, two matte spray sealants.
Why Matte Needs Its Own Coating
Gloss paint can be polished. Swirls, streaks and a coating that went on unevenly can all be leveled out with a polisher. Matte paint doesn't give you that option.
One carmaker's matte paint care guide says, "Never polish matte paintwork. Polishing causes the paint to become glossy." It also warns that rubbing the paint while you wash or dry it "could destroy the matte effect and make the paint permanently glossy." Gyeon makes the same point: matte surfaces "cannot be corrected like gloss paint."
So the job is protection that doesn't add gloss, applied carefully enough that you never need a polisher to fix it.
- ✓ Never polish matte paint
- ✓ No wax or gloss protection
- ✓ Mistakes can't be polished out
- ✓ Use coatings and sealants made for matte
What Happens If You Use a Gloss Product on Matte
- Shiny spots. Carmakers' matte care guides warn that paint cleaners, abrasives, polishing products and gloss protection such as wax "are only designed for high-gloss surfaces" and "will lead to shiny spots" on matte paint.
- Gloss you didn't want. CarPro's U.S. site sets MadMatte apart from "traditional auto paint sealers" because it protects without adding gloss.
- No easy undo. On matte, CarPro's U.S. distributor notes, you can't use abrasive polishes to remove a coating, because "Doing so would make the surface glossy."
- Shorter protection. Gyeon says Q² Matte EVO gives "better durability than standard coatings" on matte and satin finishes.
- Wrap rules. Vinyl wrap makers' care guides say not to use any form of wax, products with petroleum distillates, or abrasive polishes on wraps.

Which One Fits Your Finish
Coatings last longest but take careful prep. Spray sealants wipe on panel by panel and are made for regular top-ups. CarPro designed CQuartz Skin for film and vinyl, so we point it at wraps and PPF rather than matte paint. CarPro says not to use Skin on a surface that can't be polished until you've mastered the application and have proper lighting.

Matte Care Tips
From the paint, wrap and coating makers.
Skip wax and polish
Carmakers' matte care guides say wax and other gloss products leave shiny spots on matte paint, and that polishing makes it glossy. Wrap makers say no wax of any kind on wraps.
Wash with a pH-neutral shampoo
Gyeon recommends a pH-neutral shampoo for Matte EVO and says to avoid heavy mechanical contact. Wash by hand, out of direct sun, and dry with a clean, soft microfiber.
Test a small area first
CarPro's U.S. site says MadMatte can add richness or slightly darken some surfaces, and describes CQuartz Skin as making color look deeper. Try a hidden spot before you do the whole car, and don't over-apply MadMatte or Cure Matte: both makers warn against it.
Prep before you coat
Gyeon's directions call for Q²M Prep on an oil-free, completely dry surface, then a 15-minute wait before Matte EVO goes on.
Shop Q²M PrepWraps: no car washes or pressure jets
Wrap makers' care guides say to keep wraps out of car washes, because the brushes can damage the wrap or lift its edges, not to use high-pressure water jets, and to wash by hand with a pH-neutral car wash and a soft cloth or sponge.
