What GSM Should a Drying Towel Be?
GSM is grams per square meter: the fabric's weight, not a quality grade. Autofiber says a higher GSM isn't automatically better, and two towels with the same GSM can use different yarns, textures and construction.
Weight still tells you something: TRC says thicker, denser towels tend to be more absorbent but can also be heavier and less maneuverable. In our spec table, the lighter towels run 400+ to 540 GSM, most heavy towels sit between 820 and 1,200, and the big-truck towels hit 1,400–1,600.
So pick the weave first, then the size, and let the GSM follow.
What Size Drying Towel Do You Need?
Bigger towels cover more paint per pass; smaller ones are easier to control. TRC's rule of thumb: about 25x36 or 30x30 inches for faster drying, and 20x24 or smaller for tight spots. Not sure? Fold a bath towel to a few sizes and picture drying your car with it. Golden State sizes its Killer Bee at 22x30 so it dries side panels without touching the ground.

One Big Towel or Two?
Two, for most people: a big main towel and a small second one. One heavy towel can dry a whole car (CarPro and Maxshine pitch theirs that way), but the second towel picks up mirrors and the drips that run out of trim. If the car's very wet, Koch-Chemie's directions for its waffle drying towel say to use two cloths.
For glass, the DHydrate 20x22 has a flat woven side CarPro made for it. Do the door jambs with a separate, older towel. CarPro warns jamb towels collect sand and particles you'd never want in your paint towels.

How Do You Dry a Car Without Scratching It?
Grit dragged across the paint is the thing to avoid, and pressing harder doesn't help. Keep the paint and the towel clean, and let the towel do the work.

Check the edge and the tag before a towel touches paint; a stiff tag or a hard stitched border can mark the finish. Should You Use a Drying Aid or a Wet Coating?
You don't need either. TRC says a drying aid helps the towel glide and pick up more water. It also warns against aids with silicones or ceramic coatings on plush towels, because they can clog the fibers.
A spray-and-rinse SiO2 coating is a different thing: it adds protection during the wash, and you rinse it off before you dry. Symplex designed Spartan Aqua Guard SiO2 "specifically for wet-application." On a washed, still-wet car, spray 2–4 mists per panel, rinse right away with strong water pressure, then dry. Keep it dry for 12 hours, and don't apply it to a hot surface or in direct sun. Symplex says it reduces water spotting and works alone or as a topper on a ceramic coating.

How to Wash Microfiber Drying Towels
A drying towel only stays absorbent, and clean enough for paint, if you wash it right.
- Wash new towels first. It clears leftover lint and dye from manufacturing.
- Microfiber only. Cotton lint embeds in microfiber and ends up on your paint. Wash wheel and interior towels in a separate load.
- A liquid microfiber detergent, and not too much. Powders, pods and extra detergent can all leave residue in the fibers.
- Water temperature: follow the towel's label. Makers split here. TRC says use warm or cold and avoid hot water and sanitize cycles, Autofiber says hot is fine unless your water heater runs above 140°F, and Gyeon caps its SilkDryer at 86°F on a gentle cycle.
- No fabric softener, dryer sheets or bleach. Softener and sheets coat the fibers. Bleach weakens them.
- Air dry, or no heat or low heat. Autofiber warns even low heat can melt fibers pinned to a hot drum, and Gyeon's SilkDryer shouldn't be tumble dried at all.
- Store them away from wax and sealant towels. CarPro says mixing them is a good way to lose absorbency.

After It's Dry: Protect It
Clean, dry paint is the right time for protection. Quan Armor is our ceramic spray, and its label says it bonds directly to the clear coat for an ultra-slick, hydrophobic shield. It goes on a dry car that's clean and cool to the touch, out of direct sun. Shake it, mist a 3x3 ft section, spread it right away with a clean microfiber, then flip to a dry side or a second towel and buff. Use separate towels for this, not your drying towel. Give it 4–6 hours before water. Wear gloves and eye protection while you work, and follow the label on any coating spray you use.
